The Story

Armeria pseudarmeria ‘Ballerina Red’ (Great Thrift) pairs blade-like foliage with abundant red flowers held on sturdy stems. Winner of the Fleuroselect Gold Medal Award in 2009. them with Lewisia, Sempervivum, Nepeta, Spanish Lavender, and Greek Yarrow for a colorful and textural display. Native to the rocky coastal slopes and salt marshes of central Portugal, it thrives in poor soil with minimal care. It’s also extremely tolerant of heat and salt. Armeria requires well-drained soil, so it’s a good choice for a rock or alpine garden, container plantings, groundcover, or borders. Shear off spent flowers or cut flowers for bouquets to encourage new blooms; flowers will rebloom once deadheaded. Plant Hardy in zones 6-9, its foliage is evergreen.
