This variety typically has a shrubbier, more compact form, and is more drought tolerant than the species. Striking wine-red buds bloom on bare stems in early spring, attracting pollinators, butterflies and hummingbirds. Its seed pods also serve as a food source for songbirds. This is an an excellent specimen for pollinator friendly low-water gardens.
