The Story
Hesperaloe parviflora (Texas Red Yucca), a very showy native succulent from southern TX and northeastern Mexico, is not a new plant to cultivation. What is new about this beautiful plant has been the realization of its tolerance to sub-zero winter temperatures! Chief horticulturist, David Salman has had this plant in his display gardens at Santa Fe Greenhouses for many years, where it has flourished through numerous bone-chilling winters. So here it is; a xeric, long blooming, good-looking, very low maintenance plant that attracts hummingbirds. Hesperaloe will often take 2 to 3 years to reach blooming size. So be patient and protect it from deer who love to eat the succulent leaves. (seed propagated)
