The Story
Yucca torreyi ‘Chaves’ (Torrey’s Soapwort) is remarkably cold hardy strain collected by David Salman in Chaves County, New Mexico. The harsh conditions of this area allowed ‘Chaves’ to adapt to much colder climates than typically expected for this species. Although it starts off slowly, ‘Chaves’ eventually grows into a towering 15-foot tall phone pole-like structure.
Water regularly during the first year to help the plant establish a strong root system. After that, occasional watering during prolonged dry periods will suffice. Plant in full sun in well-drained soil and remove dead leaves from the base to keep the plant looking tidy. If space is limited, grow ‘Chaves’ in a large container – this option also allows gardeners in colder climates to move the plant indoors during extreme weather conditions.
